Paramore – After Laughter

I’ll set the scene for you, I was waking up this morning when I checked my phone and had a notification from Spotify. “Paramore’s new album has been released, listen to it now!” Seventeen-year-old Lucy inside is very excited (21 year old me is still freaking out but is a lot calmer…ish) Paramore are back!

Their last album came out in 2013 and was a mixture of classic Paramore with a splash of new of the time songs. So the anticipation of this new album was huge.

The debut single from the album is Hard Times and it’s the perfect introduction into the much-anticipated 5th studio album.

The record has a very new twist on it, it has a late 80s/ early 90s feel to it which is slightly off the zeitgeists of what is popular in the industry at the moment, however that doesn’t seem to be discouraging them as of yet.

The album is an important one to come out as it’s the first thing from them since their comeback in 2013 with their self titled album, and it’s clear that the three remaining members are the ones that work the best together, Hayley Williams, Taylor York and Zac Farro have created a flawless album.

The name After Laughter also has a back story, when I first heard the name of the album I assumed it was to do with the well known saying “after laughter comes tears” but in an interview Williams did with Entertainment Weekly before the album came out she said it was because of “that look on a person’s face when they laugh really hard and then there’s this moment where they come back to reality – I like watching for it. Maybe I’m a little bit of a creep.”

The album has been produced by Justin Meldal-Johnson who has been a previous collaborator of theirs, along side Taylor York the lead guitarist. The dark side of Hayley’s voice on the tracks was explained to Entertainment Weekly by Carlos de la Garza, an audio engineer on the album said “There was a little bit of a dark side creeping in to Hayley’s psyche… Something was eating at her, and she was able to use a lot of that as fuel for her lyrics”.
